Discus Throw men - TDK Golden League
Virgilijus Alekna (picture left) from Lithuania improved his own World best performance for 2004 in the first event of this meeting, throwing 69.21 in round five. Gerd Kanter (picture right) was second with 67.15 in this high class competition with no less than ten throws plus 65 metres.
- I am satisfied with 69.21 today. It is early in the season and I hope to improve during the next weeks. Then it will be very good, Alekna said.

 

 

200 metres men - TDK Golden League
B-final and A-final
Shawn Crawford (picture left) from USA won the race in 20.31 - in headwind 1.1 - in front of fellow countryman Justin Gatlin (picture right) in 20.39.
The b-final in this event was won by Uchenna Emedolu of Nigeria in 20.90 - headwind 1.2.

 

 

 

 

400 metres hurdles men - TDK Golden League
B-final and A-final
The a-final was all about Felix Sanchez (picture left and right - right together with Chris Rawlinson) from the Dominican Republic who once again improved his winning streak - to 35, running 48.54 to finnish well in front of Danny McFarlane from Jamaica.
- Not a good race, but not a bad either. I won and feel that I am improving all the time. The Olympics is the goal this year, but I can not think that far. I have to think one race at the time, Sanchez said.
The b-final in this event was won by Jiri Muzic from the Czech Republic in 49.59 for the sixth fastes time of the night.

 

 

High Jump women - TDK Golden League
Hestrie Cloete (picture left) from South Africa won the competition with 1.98, failing three times at 2.00.
Last years IAAF feamel athlethe of the year was the only one who managed to clear 1.98. Tisha Waller from USA (picture right) was second in 1.96, the same height as Blanka Vlasic from Croatia. Vlasic passed 1.98 and tried to go for a victory at two metres.

 

400 metres men
Tim Benjamin from Great Britain ran a good race, taking home the victory in 45.67 - four tenth a second behind his pb and well in front of Jermaine Gonzales from Jamaica in 45.96. Quincy Douglas won the Norwegian battle against Morten Sand, both running their fastest race of the season.

 

Triple Jump men - TDK Golden League
- I always want to be at the top of the World list, but it was nice to beat Jadel Gregorio (who is number one in the world at the moment with 17.72), Christian Olsson (picture left) from Sweden said after winning the event in 17.58.
- I am very satisfied, since all the jumps was in headwind. 
- I was a little bit unsure about my own capacity, since I have been training hard for a period.
Olsson had the four longest jumps in the competition, and won in front of Gregorio (picture right) who improved to 17.31 in his last jump.


 

100 m hurdles women - TDK Golden League
Gail Devers (picture left) from USA took home the race in 12.56, one tenth of a second in front of Canadian Perdita Felicien who ran a season best.
- I am satsified with the race and the time, Devers said.
On question on how she focuses on the TDK Golden League and the Olympic Games she said:
- I take one race at a time, and just see what happens. After the season I look back and see what I have achived.
- I do not run for second places, but you have to take a loss without being too depressed, Felicien said.

5000 metres women - TDK Golden League
- I have been training very hard for this - and new I could manage it, the new World Record holder Elvan Abeylegesse (picture left) said after improving the WR to 14.24.68 - taking more than three seconds of Bo Jiangs more than six years old record.
She also improved her pb by just less than half a minute.
This was also the first ever WR by a Turkish athtlete, for the former Ethiopian girl previously known as Hewan Abeye and then as Elvan Can.
- I am confident that I will win the gold medal in Athens, she said after the race.
Elvan took the lead on the third kilometre, after Oksana Belyakova had ran the first 1000 metres in 2.49.56 and Ejagayou Dibaba was first at 2000 in 5.47.36. At 3000 Abeylegesse had 8.37.84 and at 4000 11.30.43.
There was also a new World junior record in this race - by Tirunesh Dibaba (picture right) from Ethiopia who ran 14.30.88.
- Fantastic. This was a big race. After this race I am qualified for the Ethiopian Olympic team - hopefully together with my sister. In Athens I only want to run 5000 metres, Tirunesh Dibaba said.

 

Javelin Throw men
Breaux Greer (right on the picture left) from USA improved the American record to 87.39 in the third round and passed the rest of the competition. Sergey Makarov from Russia and Norwegian Andreas Thorkildsen (left on the picture left) improved to 86.19 and 84.12 in the last round for second and third - both with new season bests.
- My best throw was good, but not perfect, Thorkildsen said.
But the Norwegian, who threw a World junior record at this stadium a few years ago, was very satisfied with his competition - and the fact that he quallified for the Olympics.
- I have been working hard with my teqnique since my last competition, and it has improved, he said.

 

 

100 metres women - TDK Golden League
Torri Edwards (picture left) from USA took home the race in 11.21 in headwind 0.9 - 7/100 a second in front of LaTasha Colander.

5000 metres men
- I am an old man, but I am still here, John Kibowen (picture left) laughed after winning the race in 13.01.95.
- I hope that I can pick the form the next weeks. My big goal this season is Athens. I have to qualify in the Kenyan championships, and I hope to be among the top three there. This race gave me self confidence, 35 year old Kibowen said.
The home crowd was more than satisfied with Marius Bakken (picture right), who improved his own Norwegian record to 13.08.27.
- I am back where I was a few seasons ago. I have been training very well, but the results in competitions is what counts. I was running for 13.20 in the beginning, deciding to see how I felt after the first kilometre. In the end I was tired, but the crowd helped med through the last kilometre, Bakken said. 

 

 


1500 metres women - TDK Golden League
Irina Lischinskaya from Ukraine (136 on picture left) won the race in 4.03.76 - 2/100 a second behind her season best.
The Ukrainian girl was in front with 300 metres to go, and finnished in front of Maria Cioncan from Romania who ran 4.04.17 for second place.

800 metres men - TDK Golden League
Yuriy Borzakovskiy (picture left) from Russia won the race in 1.44.41 - more than half a second in front of Wilfred Bungei from Kenya who ran 1.45.04 for second.
- In my last race I did everything wrong. Tonight I did everything right. I was third after the first round, and managed to take home the race.
- I was a little bit surprised that I won with such a huge margin. But I do not think it is possible for one runner to take home all the races in the TDK Golden League. Now I look forward to meet Wilson Kipketer. I do not know when it will happen, but maybe in Rome - the Russian said after the race.

 

 

 

400 metres women - TDK Golden League
Tonique Williams (picture left and right - right together with Ionela Tirlea) from Bahamas took home the race in 49.78, the best time in the world so far and only the second sub 50 race in the world so far this season.
Christine Williams from Bahamas was second in season best 50.97.

 

 

1500 metres men - TDK Golden League
Bernard Lagat (picture left and right) from Kenya won the race in 3.34.08, but Ivan Geshko from Ukraine was not more than 3/100 a second behind the Kenyan runner for second place.
Sammy Mutei from Kenya sat the pace, running 55.51 and 1.54.38 for 400 and 800 metres, before Lagat took the lead. Lagat was in front at 1200 metres at 2.53.77.

 

75 000 children in the Tine relay

The Tine Relay, the first event of this meeting, is a Norwegian school relay. Close to 75.000 pupils all over Norway take part in this relay every year. It was the area finals who took part in Bergen tonight.
